Scrolling through Instagram, you’ve surely come across friends and celebrities posting selfies with sheet masks. But what is a sheet mask?
Inspired by Korean skin care, sheet masks are hydrating face products designed to boost skin with an instant dose of hydration. Korean sheet masks are typically soaked in nourishing serums and made with woven materials like cotton to increase product absorption and skin hydration. Face sheet masks might look scary at first, but their benefits are anything but! Like a giant glass of green juice for your skin, Korean face masks are quickly becoming a skin care regimen staple.
How often can you use a sheet mask?
Figuring out how often to use sheet masks is easy! Believe it or not, sheet masks are typically used twice a day in Korea. That regimen might not work for some, so we recommend applying one for 10-20 minutes at least three to four times a week to keep skin glowing 24/7.
Remember: leaving a sheet mask on for too long can actually dry out your skin—once moisture evaporates from the fabric, it’ll begin to draw it out of your skin. Scary!
How to apply a sheet mask in 4 easy steps (a.k.a. How to get glowing skin)
Applying sheet masks is simple. Whether you’re using our Revitalizing Sheet Mask, Glowing Sheet Mask, or Soothing Sheet Mask, you can use the same four easy steps to make sure skin comes out glowing:
1. Step 1:
Open package! Get ready for some seriously glowy skin.
2. Step 2:
Unfold mask and position over clean, dry skin. We like applying post-cleanse, after your usual regimen. To get that next-level glow, we make sure to first use our Cleansing Sticks, then our scrubs, before following up with a sheet mask and facial moisturizer.
3. Step 3:
Smooth to fit the curves of your face, adjusting around eyes, nose and mouth. Now turn on your favorite show, leave on for 10-20 minutes, and soak in the magic!
4. Step 4:
Remove mask and discard (avoid using again; hygiene!). Massage any remaining serum into skin. No need to rinse. Just glow and go! Use a sheet mask three to four times a week for a continuous glow. St. Ives sheet masks are free of parabens and sulfates, so you can feel good about all that your skin’s soaking in. Be sure to rub the excess in, and always follow up with a moisturizer!
Can you reuse sheet masks?
The short answer is NO! We know it can be tempting, especially knowing there’s a ton of excess serum left at the bottom of every packet, but the last thing you want to do is reintroduce the dirt and bacteria from your face…back onto your face! Get the most out of that leftover serum by applying it to the backs of your hands and neck, or saving it in a sealed container to use later.
